Afterword

This DNS Howto is almost a year in the making and I hope that it helps out someone out there protect themselves against the evils of the Internet. If built well this Linux router will stay running providing the users it protects with many years of service. I feel confident that although this document isn't designed for the newbies to computers (the ones that use the CDROM tray as a coaster) this document will give the most basic linux user a bit of field experience by building the router.

A word of Warning!

These instructions will tell you how to build a router however this is not all that a user can do to protect themselves from the malicious people on the Internet. Here are some basic good habits that the average user can do:

Keep that software current!

By keeping the software current and patched you are making sure that your computers or your entire network won't be taken over simply because you didn't want to update your software! The old adage is true: An ounce of prevention takes care of a ton of emergencies (take it easy on me.. it's tired and I'm late.)

Update your anti-Virus files!

If you have a program like Norton Antivirus or McAfee Antivirus, Keep it Up To Date! Set your antivirus programs to update every week! With viruses like SirCam and Nimda using both network-based attacks and Email attacks a good antivirus utility will help you keep your network running free and clear.

Routers don't use Email!

Contrary to popular belief, Routers do not check your Email, so therefore you need to be doubly sure about that Email you got from someone that has something.exe attached to it. Don't swap files on email! Get a burner and burn it on a CDRW! It's not worth the risk.

Ok.. I'll get off of my soapbox now.
